Get Ready

WiFi access, what to wear, local climate and packing tips—the following information aims to help you prepare and pack for our Modern Adventure in Burgundy.

COVID-19

As part of our mission to support safe and responsible travel, Modern Adventure requires all guests and staff members participating in our experiences to be fully vaccinated (including booster protocols if applicable) for COVID-19 with an authorized vaccine. We will require proof of vaccination prior to your trip’s departure for all destinations and group experiences. In addition, it may be a requirement to provide a negative COVID-19 test result prior to your departure and your return to your home country. By booking a Modern Adventure you are agreeing to these terms and to providing proof of vaccination.

The ability to provide a negative test result or comply with the vaccination requirements is the responsibility of the guest. Any cancellation due to non-compliance of these requirements will result in your booking being non-refundable or transferable.

Our Traveler Vaccination Policy is subject to change and any exceptions to this policy are granted at the sole discretion of Modern Adventure.

Please note that all of our travelers must adhere to all country-specific, regional and local protocols, and travel requirements.

Medications

If you are on prescription medication, you should ask your doctor for a letter detailing your condition and prescribed drugs. This prevents possible issues at customs and helps the local doctor if you need to buy medication while traveling. If you wear prescription glasses or contact lenses, we recommend you bring an extra pair and a copy of the prescription in case of emergency.

Climate

June is one of the best times to visit Burgundy. The weather in Beaune typically begins warming, with daily average highs in the low 70s and overnight lows around 50. We can expect occasional rain showers (June's average rainfall is about an inch) with plenty of sunshine.

Clothing

There will be occasions where you will want a smart outfit. This typically is a sports coat for men, and a casual dress or slacks and blouse for women. Your Trip Leader will be able to answer specific questions, as well as give reminders the night before, or during the day’s activity, if a more formal outfit is to be expected at any point.

Mornings and evenings can be cooler, with afternoons warm and pleasant; layering is the best option for the temperature range and types of activities on our trip. We do our best to ensure time at the hotel to change and refresh if we are switching activities during the day. Comfortable walking shoes are essential. We also suggest bringing a light rain jacket, just in case.

There are a few additional items that we recommend you to bring:

  • Hat (to protect yourself from the sun)

  • Sunscreen & sunglasses

  • Sturdy walking shoes

  • Bathing suit for spa time

  • Phone charger

  • Headphones

  • Travel pillow

  • Ear plugs

Money & Tipping

The local currency is the euro, worth roughly 1 euro to $0.85 US dollar. There are numerous ATMs in France to access your bank back home. Many restaurants and shops in France accept credit cards; however you will want some euro notes when traveling outside of the main cities.

We do our absolute best to make your Modern Adventure as simple as possible. This means almost every experience we have together will be prepaid. We recommend bringing enough money with you for a few meals on your own, as well as any souvenirs or local arts and crafts you might like to bring back with you.

Most gratuities and tips are included in our trip cost. However there are a few instances when you should consider tipping:

  • When dining out on your own, you are not expected to tip restaurants in France. A service charge is sometimes added to the bill, ranging from 1 to 3 Euros, or 10% - 15%.

  • Taxi drivers do not expect tips. However, if a driver goes out of their way to assist you, you may consider a small tip.

  • Tipping our local and Modern Adventure guides is at your discretion; to show your appreciation for good service, we recommend tipping each guide US$50 to US$75 per guest.

Internet & Connectivity

Our hotel in Beaune offers Wi-Fi, and we recommend using Wi-Fi supported apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime or Skype as an alternative to making calls from your mobile phone. For American travelers, many phone providers have temporary international travel plans, check with your provider for options.

We value disconnecting from civilization and discourage guests from active and regular connection with the outside world when we're exploring the vineyards and châteaux of Burgundy.

Electricity

In France and the rest of Europe, electricity is supplied at 220 volts and F-type sockets, both of which are different from North America (which operates at 120V, socket types A and B). For guests traveling from the US, you will need a power-plug adapter as well as a voltage converter before plugging in appliances and electrical devices.

Shipping Wine Home

There is no TSA-regulated quantity limit on beverages with less than 24 percent alcohol, such as wine. Airline-created checked baggage limits still apply, but passengers are free to use the entirety of their quota for wine transport. There is no federal limit on how much alcohol can be brought in for personal use, but U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will likely flag you if you're carrying more than a case (e.g. 12 bottles of wine) in your luggage.

Man of the wineries we visit offer direct shipping to many locations in the United States. Individual chateaux will charge and invoice you pre-VAT prices (less 20% VAT), usually with a minimum order of six bottles; plus a separate charge for shipping and insurance (recommended). Budget 10 to 15 euros per bottle in total shipping cost. Shipments typically arrive in 4 to 6 weeks. Note that it is illegal under some state laws (Pennsylvania, Utah) to deliver wine to consumers.

Visas & Passports

Visas are not required for US citizens visiting France for less than 90 days. All that is required is a valid US passport. It is recommended that your passport is valid for six months after your travels are over.

Non-US citizens should check with their local French Embassy or Consulate for information and requirements.

Travel Insurance

We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance. Travel insurance allows you to seek reimbursement for your trip costs; if your trip plans change for unforeseeable reasons, or if you need to get medical help, emergency transport, and for theft, loss or damage of items while traveling.

For best coverage, always insure the full trip cost within two weeks of your initial trip deposit and note that most 'Cancel For Any Reason' policies must be purchased on the date of your initial deposit.

While Modern Adventure does not recommend any policy specifically, we encourage you to compare benefits and options, a few of which are listed below. We recommend that any plan you select includes trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage, at minimum.
